Do You Need An Attorney?
1. Pro Se. Representing yourself can save money. There
are many free court forms online and self-help counters are available in each county. Also, check out the MN Court's Self Help Center for answers
and instructions on how to represent yourself.
2. Why an attorney would help? Often, an attorney
will know how to navigate through the court to
accomplish what you want. This can save time,
headache, and money. An attorney might also craft
your concern in a way that the court more easily
understands.
3. How do I find an attorney? First, ask friends that
you trust for suggestions; a personal recommendation
is usually best.
The MN Bar Association's Find A Lawyer is a great
place to search.
MN Courts provides a good list of websites to help
you locate a lawyer.
4. What do I ask an attorney before hiring them?
How many custody cases have you dealt with?
What are your rates?
What is the likelihood of my success?
Any agreements would be put into a fee agreement.
